Every ten years, the Georgia State Legislature approves new maps for local school boards and county commissioners for every county and entity in the state of Georgia. The legislature has set rules that provide for local legislators to introduce legislation for each entity that falls within their jurisdiction.

Some legislators in Cobb County are attempting to hijack this process by bypassing local legislation and pushing through a partisan school board map through general legislation. Passage of this alternative map would disenfranchise almost 100,000 Cobb County residents, including 55,000 residents in East Cobb, by moving these residents out of Post 6 and Post 4 which has school board elections in 2022 and moving them to alternate posts that do not have elections for another 2 years.

This map (known as the Ehrhart/Scamihorn map) also is being pushed through with zero input from the public. The current partisan board crafted the map in private with a law firm whose CEO is the husband of the legislator who is sponsoring the map. There have been no public forums to discuss the map and answer questions from residents with concerns.

If your home is located in the red area of the map below, this change will affect YOU and mean that you will lose the ability to vote in school board elections for the 2022 election cycle.

I’m writing to you as a constituent in East Cobb who is concerned about the redistricting process in the county, particularly with attempts to go outside of the local legislative process to redraw county lines for school board. I’m unhappy that myself and as many as 100,000 Cobb County residents will be shut out of voting for the 2022 school board election cycle if the partisan map introduced by Rep. Ehrhart is passed into law. As a taxpayer and parent of children in Cobb County, it is vitally important that I have representation on the school board. I’m also concerned that legislators would be considering legislation that had no feedback from the public.

I ask that you reject the school board map in HB 1028 and commit to having local legislators draw maps that represent East Cobb fairly.
